Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance
Regular freshwater aquarium maintenance will make for healthier, happier fish. But before you start eagerly cleaning your new aquarium there are a few things you need to understand about how to care for the home you’re going to bring your fish to.
The proper kind of maintenance is not just a weekly or monthly task. Maintaining your freshwater aquarium is a daily task that cannot be ignored. With diligent attention, your fish will provide you with many years of enjoyment.
Start by monitoring the water temperature in your freshwater aquarium daily. You’ll want to check it twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening. Keep a record of these temperatures so you’ll know immediately if something goes wrong with the water.
Learn your fish’s individual behaviors and appearances. The best time to do this is during a feeding. Spend a few moments studying your fish. You’ll quickly recognize when they aren’t feeling their best and you can take appropriate action to ensure none of your fish are harmed.
If you use a filter in your aquarium, you’ll want to inspect it once a day. Most filters last for several years, but it’s important to be sure your filter is working at optimum level for the health of your fish.
If your filter has particles that are obstructing it from working correctly, it’s time to rinse your filter. Do not use tap water that is a different temperature than the water inside your aquarium, harsh chemicals, or even soaps to rinse your filter.
Rinsing your filter with any of these three will upset the delicate chemical levels your fish need to survive and leave them vulnerable to disease. Instead, use water from your aquarium and gently rinse your filter then return it as usual.
You can use glass cleaner to clean the outside of your tank. Spray the cleaner on a clean cloth. Do not use glass cleaner on the inside of your tank or in any area that poses a risk of the cleaner contaminating the water. As stated earlier, your fish are sensitive to the slightest chemical changes.
If your tank seems to get dirty fast, you might be feeding your fish too often or the wrong type of food. Do a bit of research and see if you are feeding your fish the right kind of food and enough of it. You’ll want to take into account how many fish you have and what types to determine the feeding schedule that works best for your pets.
From monitoring the water temperature daily to studying your fish’s behaviors, having healthy fish starts with keeping your aquarium stable and clean. Remember to follow these tips to help your fish thrive in their freshwater aquarium.
